I couldn't help it. My friend Kevin sent me this quiz he found. It's just too dorky not to be enchanted by it.

If I were a Springer-Verlag Graduate Text in Mathematics, I would be Frank Warner's Foundations of Differentiable Manifolds and Lie Groups.

I give a clear, detailed, and careful development of the basic facts on manifold theory and Lie Groups. I include differentiable manifolds, tensors and differentiable forms. Lie groups and homogenous spaces, integration on manifolds, and in addition provide a proof of the de Rham theorem via sheaf cohomology theory, and develop the local theory of elliptic operators culminating in a proof of the Hodge theorem. Those interested in any of the diverse areas of mathematics requiring the notion of a differentiable manifold will find me extremely useful.

Which Springer GTM would you be? The Springer GTM
Test

heh... math [16 Nov 2005|02:29pm]

So today was really cool academicly. So ok, in Differential Forms we've been talking about (believe it or not) differential forms! So we got to talking about 0, 1, 2, and 3-forms; defined em all, and all that good stuff in R³. Then we got to K-froms in Rª (wish I knew how to put 'n' instead of 'a' cause that's the convention...) Then, we got to the part where were taking the exterior derivatives as an almost exact sequence from 0-forms -> 1-forms->..->k-forms->(k+1)-forms->... See, it's not exact so the kernel of one doesn't equal the image of the other, right? (oh, sequences and kernels and images are all stuff from linear). Well then you take the part that's in the kernel that didn't come from the image, and that's the Kth deRham cohomology. See that set is made up of basically all the singularities and stuff in any one particular k. And we've been doing stuff with singularities in complex analysis! All three of my classes came together today! It was cool...
Right? well that's just the start! cause we're doing tensor products in linear, which is what the GUT seminar is this year (which really isn't apart of the linear course, but is ver cool nonetheless), and we finally got enough information to do the homework. But that's not the cool part, the cool part is like well, a tensor product is basically defined by its properties. You have two R-Modules, say M and N, and you take an R-bilinear map (say f) from MxN to C, some abelian group, right? Well you then have a unique homomorphism from M®N to C (say g) where g(m®n)=f(mxn). Oh, that ®? I'm using that to represent tensor product.

I had an awesome weekend, at least friday to saturday. Sara was up with her parents (for like a shopping trip), which was an increadible treat. I of course didn't get much done on sunday though. I want to play more WoW, but I have so much work that I haven't been able to lately. I'm proud of myself for staying away from it though. I've been... well maybe not entirely caught up on work, but I haven't been falling any further behind. Oh, and my clalc students have a test friday, so I probably won't have class for em on tuesday (since thanksgiving break starts wednesday anyway. Also, the past couple days have been nice and spiritual, today was especially cool in that respect. I like playing with energy. But now, well I don't know what to put for mood. I have a lot to sort through in my head, so howabout... contemplative? psh, I don't like that emoticon; it implies confusion.
k, I have some things to do and then sleep.

Bah, somehow my clock changed itself. It was right earlier today- I went to things on time. Then I look at it a few minutes ago, and it says 11:10, so I blieve it. However, this was wrong, now I have less time than I thought. bah!

Also today I feel like I've been something of a useless lump. Go go tomorrow power! Vivat for sleep!

So I actually spent some money today.
I was on my way down to Bangor to buy some necesarry protection for fencing (read: a cup,so as not to get my stuff stabbed), and I was thinking to myself how wasteful it is to drive. I had asked most of the people I knew if there was somewhere within waling or biking distance that I could have gone to get sportsware, but to no avail. In any case, I still felt guilty for driving the 10 minutes down there (and 10 back! /gasp). So I decided to get my consumerist fix, and buy stuff for myself. Lucky for me, Dick's is an anchor store for the Mall. So I got a NERV shirt off the discount rack at Hot Topic ($8, woohoo!), since Eva's on Adult Swim and it has me feeling nostalgic. I got a couple of books at Borders: The Path of Daggers, book eight in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, and The Elements of Ritual, a cool metaphysical/pagan book I had seen a long time ago, but hadn't been able to find for at least a year (nor could I remember the title to look it up). Then the big item- Soul Calibur III with the soundtrack and artbook/strategy guide. It's really cool so far; I wonder why it's PS2 exclusive, too. I just always feel nervous about spending more than $50 at one time. Well that should be the sum total of my nonesential purchases (at least for myself) for the next 2 months, give or take.

Gotta get up bright and early tomorrow to try to authorize for fencing, so it's off to bed for me.

Now we're up to speed [02 Nov 2005|06:17pm]
[ mood | accomplished ]

So I just got back from fencing. That's why I had to leave that last one as a more "overview of things" kind of update. Anyway, that's one of three groups of people I've met and enjoyed the company of since I got here; The Blade Society, math grad students, and Elements. That last one is this really great group of pagan people, kinda like PWA, but when everyone got along. I probably spend the most time with the grad students, you know, every day.
We have our own office, and it's about three doors down from where I take all three of my class on MWF. (In case you're interested, that's Complex Analysis, Differential Forms (kinda like calc 3+), and Advanced Linear Algebra (which is all abstract)). On T/TH, I teach Cacl I at 12, 1, and 2 to about 20ish students each class (they have instruction from a lecturer as well, I just make sure they get it).
Anyway, Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 is fencing, and I've gone just about every time this year. This has enabled me to learn enough that there's a chance I'll get to go to the Bare-Blade Tavern Brawl, and possibly get authorized for SCA fencing.
Mondays are Elements days, and that's super great. Last weekend, we went on the school-sponsored trip to Salem, MA, and even though there were a ton of tourist-trappy things, it was wicked great. Mostly because of the company (the shopping was top-notch as well). And just this past monday which was Samhain, for those of you keeping track at home, we had a really nice little party.

Let's see... anything else? Ok, so my room is in Estabrooke Hall, which is the "graduate/foreign/nontradition student" hall, so it's pretty quiet, and I have a fair-sized room. I spend a good deal of time in here, obviously, and the dining hall is just a hop, skip, and jump away. I still play WoW, so let's hope that doesn't suck up all my time, hm?

If I left anything out, ask me about it.

Ok, I think that sets up the scene pretty well. Now it's just a matter of day-to-day drama (or lack thereof) and of course

Quizzes!Collapse )

May 6th- November 2nd in one update? Forget that. Minor details of the major events of the recent past include: I'm at UMaine in Orono doing the grad school thing, I am TA for Calculus here. I have a car. That's about it for big changes. I mean there are all the consequences of moving at least 7 hours away from everyone you know- you start out really not knowing anyone, and really missing everyone at home. That's right all you plattsburgh and EG people, I miss you. And I especially my Sara. My day-to-day life goes on just the same as it always has: class and work interspersed with games, food and sleep. I've taken up fencing, so that's a good waste/use of my time, too. Upcoming soon: more quizzes (of course) and more actual updates (fo' real this time!)

I don't post for how many months, and the thing that gets me back is a feeling of responcibility that I've been "tagged" to do a quiz? I guess I'm pretty lame.

So I graduated from Plattsburgh with my BS in math (minor in computer science), and I got accepted into UMaine on a teaching assistantship. Looks like I'm pretty se there. I'm going to visit maine in a couple weeks with Sara, we're going to check out the campus and the sights. I can't wait. I just got back from Sara's tonight actually, and I want to go back. What can I say, I'm crazy about her.
For now, though, I'm working back at questar for the summer. Oh, and I recently came into posession of my mom's car, a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus. So that's pretty sweet.

K, the reason I went and made this post... (tagged by Justin and Rob (rob had 8, justin 6))

List your current six favorite songs, then pick six other people that have to do the same.

(and by the way, this is rediculously difficult, and could change completely by next week)
In no partiular order:

1:Troubled by the Way We Came Together- Natalie Ambruglia
2:Velveteen- Troy
3:Inner Universe- Origa w/ Shanti Snyder
4:Song For Holly- Esthero
5:One Beat- Sleater Kinney
6:After All- Delerium

I'm very happy to steal this one [09 Dec 2004|10:49am]
[ mood | quizzical ]

Rules:
1. on your current playlist, hit shuffle and pick the first thirty-five songs on the list (no matter how cheesy or embarrassing).
2. write down one line of the song. try to avoid putting the song title in the line.
3. have your friends comment and see if they know the songs. (NO CHEATING!)
4. when someone guesses correctly, strike out the line and list the correct name of the song next to it. (don't strike out the line until the song's ARTIST and NAME have both been guessed correctly!)

Here's the thing: I tend to have a lot of video game and anime soundtracks, so I got rid of the ones without lyrics. This makes things more fair, but it's still going to be very difficult. (It's not all video game/anime stuff, of course!)
Good Luck!Collapse )

You scored as The Dragon Clan. You are a member of the Dragon Clan! People find you strange, and don't really understand you, but that's because you see things from a unique perspective. You stand back and let others find out things by themselves, and perhaps give a friendly nudge once in a while to get them in the right direction.

Edit:
The worst part is that there were pictures of both Tabitha and Lady. I really wanted to send those to Sara. I don't know what I'd do with myself if there was a picture of max on there
